About Us
Learn more about our story and why we created Nurturing Neurotypes
We began Nurturing Neurotypes after meeting many parents through our work at Every Mind Child Psychology as clinical psychologist. We meet parents at different points in their journey of discovery - some have recently discovered that their child is autistic or has a diagnosis of ADHD, some have known for some time and are looking at new ways to support them and enable them to thrive. Some have tried for 'traditional' approaches to parenting and found it not to be effective, or in some cases, has negative effects for their child. So Nurturing Neurotypes became a place where we could share a different perspective on parenting, one that respects a child's neurotype and encompasses respect, understanding, validation and connection.
As we began to think about what courses may be helpful, we spoke to parents about what they would like to know about. We also spoke to children and young people about what they would like their parents to know about neurodivergence and how they would like to be parented.
At Nurturing Neurotypes, our mission is the celebrate neurodivergence and help our young people to flourish and thrive. For too long, many parenting approaches have utilised behavioural techniques such as planned ignoring, punishments, and time outs, all of which can be shaming, invalidating, and scary for a child, leaving them feeling unheard, misunderstood and doesn't respect their internal world, neurotype or point in development. Through our courses, we want to change this and empower parents to be affirming yet supportive, to raise resilient, strong and self-confident young people.
